Grades Update & Presentation Feedback

The updated May 2 grade sheet has posted to the grades page – almost all of the class’ work has been submitted. As a class you did very well on the test, with many achieving the 90% needed to instruct the course. I will post your final grade on Monday (you can more or less figure it out now if you want). Again, please check to make sure the grade for your submitted work is accurate.
Beth was absent for the Micro #2 teaching, so for her Reflection I asked her to reflect on your oral presentations 0 I think she has done an excellent, balanced job:

Critical Reflection on Physiology Power Point Presentation

Overall, I thought that all of the power points presented in class were very well done, and were very interesting on many different levels. I am first going to give some of the positives about the presentations, then I will give some constructive criticism, and then end on a positive note (clearly using the sandwich method).

The first positive comment that I have is the power points were put together very well. Just about everyone tried to make their slides look nice, and it was clear that a lot of effort was put into the actual making of the slides. Also, everyone did a nice job engaging the audience. Some people gave actual demonstrations of their sport, and almost everyone made great eye contact with the audience. Speaking clear was also something everyone did a good job with. I never felt that I couldn’t understand someone, so annunciation and dictation was not an issue.

Although the presentations were very good, there are still some things that everyone can work on. First, a lot of people talked very fast, and in a presentation that had a lot of numbers and confusing facts, talking slow is the key to ensure that everyone is able to follow along and understand what your presentation is about. Also, incorporating more media into the power points is something to think about. Numbers and long facts can be confusing, and sometimes not very engaging. By incorporating a video or pictures can engage the audience better, and it can also help the audience understand more of what is happening.

Again, the presentations were all really great, and everyone should be very happy with their own presentation. The effort put into the power points was clear, and I thought everyone presented themselves very well. Great job!

As I said in class today you all did (in a variety or ways demonstrating various strengths and weaknesses) a very good job at what I consider to be the key component of this course – critical reflection on what you believe about coaching, accompanied by solid analysis using the various reference materials you were introduced to – so nice job! I will be happy to provide a reference for you if you need one when applying for a job with a coaching component.

Analyzing Coaching Articles

I actually have a particlar point of view that I would like to advance with our ESS Department: increase the number of academic credits attributed to the Practicum (Asst. coach to Smith team), and reduce the number of credits for the class-based academic courses.
If coaching experience IS the central component in a coaches education, I would like to add a Distance Education option to our Master’s program, so that Pro Basketball (for example) or Olympic coaches could continue to coach in their “home” environment, with their daily, practical coaching experience being supplemented by the Smith College academic classes (webcast, Skype, etc.).

I would like to solicit your help in constructing an argument to our department.

In order not to duplicate our efforts in analyzing the articles, I would like to divide up each article according to last name, so everyone’s “three most important or three most interesting points” hopefully will be somewhat different:

We have two goals for Monday’s class:

Go over procedures for the online ASEP test you will be taking.
Follow-up up on Friday’s discussion of coaching and how coaches learn.

I will introduce Coaching as a newly developed academic discipline, and we will finish up our course by discussing the topic(s) How Coaches Learn to Become (Expert) Coaches.

Here is the updated syllabus resulting from moving our “spare” class to allow more time to complete the Physiology Assignment: ESS 110 Updated Syllabus

Note that class on Friday April 24th will be conducted via Web Conference (YUGMA), as will any individual student meetings that day (at the scheduled time). Students are responsible for downloading and installing the appropriate software (instructions to be posted shortly).

Wed. Presentation Order & Posting PP to Blog

There are three ways to post your Physiology Powerpoint presentation to the web, depending on your objective: 1) do you want people to be able to download and use your powerpoint? 2) do you want to almost guarante universal access with minimum hassle? 3) do you wnat people to be able to vieww your work within your blog? Here are the methods that respond to these needs:

Save powerpoint as movie, then open with Quicktime Pro (Smith lab on Mac?) and use “Export for Web” in file menu:

Adjustment to Schedule

As negotiated in class, we will NOT have a class this Friday, April 10th (this will use up the SPARE I had scheduled on Friday April 24th – so we WILL have class on Friday, April 24th).

This means that we will simply shift our schedule forward by one class – i.e., you will hand in your physiology papers on Monday, April 13th; and those scheduled to present this Friday will now present on Monday; those scheduled to present on Monday will now present next Wednesday. I will adjust and repost the adjusted course outline this weekend.
